Mac and cheese hamburger helper recipe
And I adore controlling the ingredients and limiting it to ones I can pronounce. I had hamburger helper many moons ago when my son was growing up. He loved it and I did not. But your dish looks so much better an very creamy sauce. I would like to cook this for my husband and myself. The dish looks yummy. I have tried many of your recipes and never once disappointed. Homemade Hamburger Helper is one of my favorite meals ever! But I rarely make it because I eat half the pan and then go into a carb coma. Made this last night. It was delicious and the whole family asked when I could make it again.
Easy too. Looking forward to trying more Daring Gormet. I made this last night for supper and my year old son loved it. So rich, creamy and yummy. I have tried a few other Hamburger Helper recipes and they were not what I was excpecting. Today I was craving it and almost caved and got the box junk. I am so glad I gave your recipe a try!! My family and I loved it and will definitely make it again.
Thank you :. A blast from the past for me. Tasty and quick to prepare on busy nights. Thanx for sharing! I just made this,it was so easy and quick plus budget friendly. My teenage son devoured a big plate and my super picky 3 year old loved it!! Hi Kimberely, The recipe was great, I was just messing around.
This was SO good! We even slipped a mashed up spoonful to our 8-month old, and I think we have a new HH fan in the house! Loved this recipe as is. Second time I made it I used half pepper jack cheese, bowtie pasta and mixed in a can of whole kernel corn at the end for a bit of a Southwest flavor. Mmm mmm! Definitely a great recipe!
There are other homemade hamburger helper recipes out there but your photos and easy recipe got me hooked in and this was such comfort food for everyone. Kiddies absolutely love it and my three year old loves to help with seasoning and the cheese part. When substituting turkey for the ground beef, should I replace the beef stock with water or chicken stock? Now I am having to double the recipe so the husband and kids can have leftovers for lunch the next day!
Everyone loves it right down to my 2 year old grandson. One thing my daughter and I did notice was that when you double this recipe the noodle stay more the correct size unlike the boxed version when you try to cook two boxes the noodle get all funky. Great recipe, thank you so much!! Hi Jada, any of them will work equally well, it just comes down to personal preference. I like strong cheeses so I usually keep my fridge stocked with sharp cheddar.
Love this! This tastes spot on to what I remember eating as a kid! Best part is, my son loves it too! I made this recipe this evening. It came out a little bland. Is that where I went wrong? Any suggestions for spicing it up? Thank you. Made this tonight for my crazy picky 14 month old.
Thanks for sharing! I made this recipe in my Instant Pot. The advantage to using the electric pressure cooker is a shortened cook time. Totally delish and simple!! I shared leftovers with my co-workers and they enjoyed it as well! Hi Trixie, how many minutes did you set your instant pot for? I just personally use and recommend it because it has the highest smoke point for frying.
You can use any oil you like. Happy cooking! I made this: it was great. The seasoning blend was perfect. I omitted the sugar and a tablespoon flour and it was still great and flavorful.
Homemade Hamburger Helper
I also used a cup of mozzarella and a cup cheddar. With the variations it was awesome so you can still make this without having to run to the store for certain ingredients. Agreed, this recipe is very conducive to substitutions and the ground mushrooms were a nice call. Thanks so much for a great home made recipe of a childhood favorite!
I always like to add more veggies in a recipe wherever I can so we added some finely chopped celery and yellow pepper to the meat at the same time as the onion, and also added some baby spinach that we had left in the fridge when it was time to add the cheese we used old cheddar. Love the flavours of the seasoning, and loved that we were able to control the salt and sugar in this recipe as opposed to the boxed Hamburger Helper. Thanks again!
This is now bookmarked in our favorites! Had to thank you as I make this at least once a month. The recipe doubles very well to feed my five growing boys and my hamburger helper loving husband. I try to always have these staples on hand so I can whip this up on nights that are hectic. The meal goes a long way for the cost. That it is healthier as well is icing on the cake! Fantastic, Sara! I started making homemade hamburger helper a while ago and I will never go back!
I love your recipe! I added diced red and yellow peppers, some smoked paprika, and cumin.
One Pot Homemade Hamburger Helper
I also omitted the sugar. It was so delicious and provides so much more food than the box. Thanks for the great recipe! It was chilly, a couple days ago, so I made your recipe. The only thing I did, was to add some Worcestershire sauce. This was super duper easy to make, and my husband loved it. It brought back childhood memories for both of us. It was even better, then next day, as my work lunch. Thank you for such a great recipe. I was mad at myself today because I forgot to get a box of it at the store and now I found this! However, both times, I have found that I need to add about a cup of water toward the end to get the macaroni to cook all the way.
The first time, I even went back to see if I had missed some liquid component of the recipe. Are you using whole wheat or some other kind of pasta? That may need more liquid. I have an induction cooktop and I have found that water boils very fast in the pot. This is because the entire pot heats up not just the bottom. Took me a long time to figure this out but I used to have the same problem with the boxed pasta dishes. New stove and better cookware fixed it. Pretty good. I could have done without the sugar I think.
It was a little curdled. My husband loved it! My daughter will not est any added sugar in her diet. We substituted ingredients without added sugar and wow this was awesome! This is a great recipe for a good meal for my family. I just found this recipe and I loved it!! It was also a hit for my 2 year old! It sure hit the spot. Just made this for the family!!

My kids liked it way better then the boxed stuff!! Thanks for the great quick recipe :. Just made this for my grandkids! We have a new Wednesday night tradition! My kids devoured it. Boyfriend claimed there was too much cheese never knew there was such a thing. Idk why someone said it costs too much..
Hamburger helper costs about 2, 2. Then you have to buy milk and ground beef too. I guess it would cost about.. I always have spices on hand and it costs a buck each to replace. Anywhoo, just trying to prove a point that it really doesnt cost a whole bunch more than a buck, buck fifty to upgrade to hamburger helper made from scratch. Worth it in my eyes.
Homemade Cheeseburger Macaroni Hamburger Helper
Will be making again, with maybe just 1. Swans Crossing! I loved that show. We stopped using Hamburger Helper about one year ago. Everyone loved the box stuff, but we are trying to eat cleaner.
I love whole wheat pasta. And I used to love hamburger helper as a kid bad I know , but I love that this is just as easy! I am craving it now for lunch :D. I have never been attracted to this stuff :- that comes on a can or container. I have seen the commercials about it before, and never knew what the heck it was because we don't have it in Spain. However, now that you have made this from scratch I could actually give this a go What a great version of Hamburger Helper.
Thanks for bringing me back my college days Erin! I never had this growing up because my mom always did homemade meals now I know why , but in college I bought it a lot because I was lazy or something…. My husband ate this all the time as a kid, and is always requesting it, but I hate the thought of all the preservatives in the boxed mix. Adding this to our meal plan next week for sure…thank you! This looks so delicious Erin… just the kind of kiddo-style comfort food I've been craving lately. Thanks for sharing! Hi Erin! Nice to see savory food on your blog. I am sure it's delicious!

It looks so yummy! You have given me an idea to complete my week's dinner menu! Oooh, it's Flavia! And someone likes seeing savory food over here — YAY! I adore this, Erin! I grew up on hamburger helper but never buy it now. I love the idea of a homemade version! You really can't tell the difference between the whole wheat and normal version. It's too cheesy. However, your pasta looks and sounds delicious.
I basically grew up on German pre-mixed spaghetti sauce seasoning Knorr I think is most popular. It has molded my taste buds so much that I have never had any spaghetti sauce since that I liked any better not even in Italy ; Have you tried it yet? I am curious how 'American taste buds' perceive it :.
Pre-mixed spaghetti sauce?! I didn't know that this was a thing. I know about the carbonara ones and they sound okay, but spaghetti sauce?! This is me when I first had to try Hamburger Helper. It's powder! If I work up the courage to buy it one day, I'll let you know what I think. I use ground turkey when I try to make something similar to this and I was just thinking about making it again this week. I think you read my mind — this version looks and sounds spectacular. Oh and so easy too. I always try to complicate things in the kitchen.
Slow down Sally! You know what, I have no idea what's going on in your kitchen other than loads of cookies and muffins. It would be so fun to see a savory Sally week or something! Although I realize people are there for the sweets. Anyway, I'd be interested! And yes, slow down, you! No need to make it fussy. Your email address will not be published. Your Website URL.

Thank you! Erin replies to Lori Kaus April 20, pm. Thanks a bunch for your feedback. Lisa Zellers says February 25, pm. I doubled everything, and cooked for about the same amount of time. Do I need to cook longer or not double everything? Everyone loves this dish every time I make it;.
Did this recipe omg sooo good. Added kd powder cheese to it mmm with white cheddar. My son loved it. I tweaked a couple of things, though. Instead of onion powder and garlic powder, I added fresh onion and garlic. And when I added the water to the pan, I also added a cup of real bacon bacon bits. That was for a double batch. Tasted better than boxed. Easy ingredients, easy to make.. Its lightly flavorful and I used homemade chicken stock so I could taste hints of that too.
You should totally try it! Its a better option than the box just because you can pronounce all the ingredients and I bet it has no where near the sodium amount. I made this tonight and it was a hit — a rarity with picky young kids! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe. I added finely chopped broccoli and this dish is definitely going into the rotation! What type of hot sauce did you use in yours? And when you do yours do you use just low sodium chicken broth? I use Cholula almost exclusively lol! Yes, Chicken stock is just fine!
