The will open on a windows machine, but I'm confined to my house and would ideally prefer to view these files on my computer MacBook Pro, running Have you tried VLC? If it's a media file, VLC has a better than average chance of opening it.

To do this open a terminal and type "file " no quotes but including the space then drag the file on to the terminal window and hit return. I'm not sure I fully understand what you are referring to. Most files start with a specific number sequence that identifies what kind they are like an extension, but inside the file. The file command reads that from your file and tries to figure out what type it is based on that sequence.

Every terminal command just prints stuff to the window as text, it won't let you read the data in your file, but it'll tell you what format it is if it recognises it. I'm suggesting this purely because the format could just be a zip full of images, if it is then the file command will tell you so. The only extension this site finds is something BlackBerry, which obviously isn't what you want.

It just says ".

I honestly have no idea. Sounds like a filetype proprietary to the maker of the security camera. Therefore, without an installation of Windows on your Mac, I'm afraid you probably won't be able to view them.

And 'confined to your house' sounds like you won't be able to pop out for a copy of Windows 7 Home Basic any time soon. It's crazy the lengths I'm having to go to just to prove my innocence. It would definitely help if i wasn't on house arrest, lol. Maybe you could install a trial of CodeWeavers Crossover Mac or Parallels and then find the website for the company that makes the security camera and see if you can run their software that way.

I found out that it could very well be some sort of proprietary file format for a product from Honeywell called Rapid Eye Multi-media. I wonder what would happen if you tried changing the extension to a common video file type and then attempting to open it in vlc or MPEG Streamclip or Handbrake.

Upon further review in terminal, the filetype is nonspecific. It just says that it's a data file.

This would make sense because its a cctv system and I'm positive that those sorts of files are encrypted somehow. The drivers for whatever makes it run must be hidden within the encrypted files, because when opened on a windows machine, the files expand into more files, but the active application for running it on windows is labeled "REMClip. Fucking mysterious. I've asked my friend who is also involved in the case, but haven't heard back from him yet, so as of right now I don't know. Lepton may also be used with pipes -- be sure to check the exit code when using pipes as if compression fails lepton will produce 0 bytes and return a nonzero exit code failure. In this case do not assume the 0 byte file is representative of the original. Additionally you can configure lepton to process progressive jpegs.

Warning: these take more memory to decode than normal JPEGs since the entire framebuffer must be kept in memory for the duration of the decompression, instead of just 2 rows of blocks.

Lepton is designed to be easy to debug, but a command line requirement is necessary to prevent the standard forks that let it do a secure verification in a separate process. To avoid setting follow fork flags, please pass -skipverify to the command line. This will stop verification and let you debug the app as a single process application. If the bug happens in single threaded mode, also you can pass -singlethread which makes it easier to step through the code without other threads hitting breakpoints.

Also the paq algorithms combine for a highly compressed JPEG result when decompression time is less critical. Skip to content.
