I started with my default position of blaming myself but on further searching, I am back to shoddy qnap product. The "plan" was that raid would provide level 1 protection. The reason I - and presumably many others out there - moved to a qnap was for a more professional, quality, well-protected system that would not ever destroy all of the data.
Thereafter you retain a spare disk. If I connect the internal drive or the external drive to my Mac running OS X El Capitan today, I get the message that the disk is not recognized and do I want to initialize the disk, which of course, erases everything on the disk. Does anyone know of a way I can read the data on these drives using my Mac? Is there some application I can install on the Mac that will allow these drives to be read?

Keep working after a disk fails.
